The Club Easiest to Fit Badly While Looking Impressive

Hand somebody four drivers and forty balls and one of them will produce the longest shot of the afternoon. That tells you which driver caught the best swing. It does not tell you which driver you should own, and the two answers agree less often than anyone would like.

What we judge on

The Pattern, Not the Peak

A driver spends its working life doing two jobs. Occasionally it produces a shot you remember all week. Far more often it decides whether your second shot is played from a fairway, from thick grass, or from a different hole entirely. The second job is worth several strokes a round and the first one is worth an anecdote.

So the driver block is built around dispersion. We capture where the ball finishes laterally, how wide the spread of that finish is, and how much carry survives on the strikes that were not clean. A candidate that gives up four yards on the middle of the face and holds twelve yards more on the heel side is the better club for almost every golfer who walks through the door, and the raw carry column will never say so on its own.

Impact tape goes on the face for every candidate. The photograph gets kept, the heel-to-toe and crown-to-sole spreads get measured with a scale, and both numbers appear on your card next to the launch data. When a shaft change tightens the strike pattern by four millimetres, that is a finding with a mechanism behind it rather than a lucky run of good contact.

The most common outcome is a length change. Stock driver length has crept upward for two decades, and the majority of golfers who come in for a driver block leave with a shorter club than the one they arrived with, usually built around the head they already owned.
Order of operations

Four Variables, Moved One at a Time

Change two things at once and the sheet cannot say which one did the work. The sequence below is the whole reason a driver block takes ninety minutes rather than thirty.

    First variable

    Length, Before Anything Else

    Because it is free, because it changes the strike pattern more than any component swap, and because getting it wrong makes every later comparison noisy. We test in half-inch steps using the head you brought, and we watch the face tape rather than the carry column.

    Second variable

    Head, at a Fixed Shaft and Length

    Heads differ in how much they resist twisting, where their mass sits, and how the face is curved. Those differences show up on mishits and hide on centre strikes, so this stage is read almost entirely from the off-centre column.

    Shaft, Selected by Profile and Weight

    Candidates are chosen from the bench numbers, not the letters. Weight comes first because it changes tempo, then tip-zone stiffness, which is where launch and spin actually live. Two to four candidates, alternated against the baseline rather than hit in a row.

    Hosel Setting and Weighting

    Last, because it is the finest adjustment and because it moves loft, lie and face angle together. We show you the chart, then we measure what actually happened rather than trusting the chart, which is not always the same thing.

Why the baseline keeps coming back. Every candidate is compared against fresh baseline swings taken in the same ten minutes, not against the baseline you hit an hour ago. Arms get tired inside ninety minutes, and a comparison that ignores that is measuring fatigue.
Numbers in context

Launch and Spin Are a Pair, Never a Target

There is a persistent idea that a driver fitting is a search for a published launch and spin combination. It is a tidy story and it falls apart the moment you notice that the published numbers were derived for a clubhead speed, an angle of attack and a ball that may have nothing to do with yours.

What actually matters is the relationship between the two on your delivery. A golfer swinging down on the ball needs loft from somewhere, and taking spin out of that flight without adding launch produces a ball that falls out of the sky early. A golfer swinging up has the opposite problem and the opposite solution. Chasing a spin figure in isolation is how people end up with drivers that measure beautifully in a room and lose thirty yards into a breeze.

So the card reports launch and spin together, with descent angle beside them, and marks all three as modelled where they are modelled. If the winning configuration gets there with more spin than the internet would recommend, and the dispersion and the descent angle are both better, that is the configuration we recommend and the card explains why.

A driver that is nine yards shorter and stays in play twice as often is not a compromise. It is the correct club, and the carry column will argue with you about it.

Before you book

Three Things Worth Doing First

Play two rounds and count

Count fairways hit and, more usefully, count the misses by side. A driver block starts from a pattern, and two rounds of honest counting describes your pattern better than any description of how it feels.

Bring the driver you play

Including the one you are convinced is finished. Half the value of the block is the baseline, and a baseline taken on a loaner tells us nothing about the club currently in your bag.

Bring your ball

A sleeve is enough. We run the block on a reference ball so results stay comparable across sessions, then repeat a short set with yours. Spin is where the difference shows up.

Ninety Minutes on One Club
