A Launch Monitor Is the Wrong Instrument for a Putt

It was designed to track a ball travelling at a hundred and forty miles an hour through open air. Asked to describe a ball rolling at four, it produces numbers with error bars wider than the differences anyone is trying to measure. So we use something else.

The instruments

A Roll Rig, a Stroke Camera, and Eleven Feet of Real Surface

The roll rig measures what happens in the first three feet after impact: how far the ball skids before it starts rolling forward, whether it hops, and how much sideways energy it picked up from a face that was not square. Skid distance is the number that separates putters far more reliably than anything printed on a spec sheet, and it responds strongly to loft, shaft lean and where on the face the ball was struck.

The stroke camera runs at a high enough frame rate to see the face rotating through the stroke rather than inferring it from start and end positions. What comes out is an arc: how far inside the line the head travels back, how much the face rotates relative to that arc, and where the low point of the stroke sits relative to the ball.

The eleven-foot surface is exactly that. A rolled and measured strip of putting surface at a length long enough to expose a start-line error and short enough that everybody in the room has a genuine opinion about whether it should have gone in. Everything on the card is checked against results on that strip.

Why eleven feet. Inside six, almost any putter goes in often enough to hide a problem. Beyond twenty, speed control dominates and start line becomes hard to isolate. Eleven is where a half-degree of face error at impact is the difference between the hole and the lip.
Order of operations

Length First, and It Is Wrong on Most Putters We See

Standard putter length exists because retail racks need to hold something. It fits a narrow band of human beings and everybody else adapts their posture to the club, which is exactly backwards.

    Stage one

    Posture, Then Length

    We set you into a comfortable, repeatable posture without a putter in your hands, measure from the crease of the hand to the ground, and build from there. The putter is cut to the posture. A putter an inch too long pushes the hands out and the eyes inside the line, which produces a reliable push that no amount of aim adjustment fixes.

    Stage two

    Eye Line and Aim

    With the length correct, we check where your eyes sit relative to the ball and then measure where you actually aim using a laser on the head. Aim error and perceived aim disagree for most golfers, and the size of that disagreement changes with head shape and sight-line style rather than with effort.

    Arc and Hang

    The camera describes your natural stroke arc. Head balance is then matched to it: face balanced for a stroke that stays close to straight, progressively more toe hang as the arc opens up. Matching these is not a preference question, it is the difference between a face that returns square on its own and one that needs timing.

    Head Weight Against Green Speed

    Heavier heads suit slower surfaces and shorter strokes; lighter heads suit fast greens where the stroke is already delicate. We ask which courses you play, set the strip to a comparable speed, and test two or three head weights against it. This stage changes distance control more than anything else in the block.

    Stage five

    Loft, Lie and Grip

    Loft is set against your shaft lean at impact so the ball starts rolling rather than hopping. Lie is set so the sole meets the surface flat, since a toe-up putter aims left before you have done anything. Grip size and shape come last and change how much the hands can rotate the face.

Expectations

What a Putter Block Can and Cannot Do

It can fix aim. Aim error is measurable, it is largely a function of head design and eye position, and correcting it is the single most reliable improvement available in this block. Golfers who aim two degrees right and compensate with a pull are extremely common and the compensation is never perfectly consistent.

It can improve start line by matching hang to arc, and it can improve distance control by matching head weight to the speeds you actually putt on. Both of those show up in the four-round follow-up more often than not.

It cannot fix green reading, and it cannot fix a stroke that changes shape under pressure. If the camera shows a stroke with no repeatable pattern at all, we will say so and suggest the money is better spent elsewhere. That happens perhaps one block in ten, and we would rather say it than sell a putter into it.

Most golfers do not need a different putter. They need the one they have to be an inch shorter, two degrees flatter, and aimed where they think it is aimed.

Length, lie and loft corrections on your existing putter are bench work and can usually be done the same afternoon. Roughly four putter blocks in ten end that way.

And the one before it, if it is still in the garage. The baseline matters here more than in any other block, because the comparison is against a stroke you have grooved for years.
